Woodcuts and Linocuts are some of my favorite processes! I love all the steps and layers in carving a block, rolling the ink, and printing it on paper. Woodcuts are made by cutting into blocks of wood, with special carving chisels (a linocut is made the same way, except linoleum to carve into instead of wood). The areas getting carved away do not print, because the ink adheres only to the raised surface of the block.

All my artwork is original; drawn, carved, and printed by me. I use one block of wood, that I carve layer by layer- color by color, until the block is reduced and most of the image is carved away. I produce small limited editions of each image, and once the block is fully carved and the last color is printed, the edition is done. I can not print anymore from the block of wood, making the them truly unique.
What is a Print?
Fine art printmaking prints are 100% original works of art made by hand- much like a painting. Each one is numbered, titled, and signed by the artist. Do not be confused by the word print, these are not reproductions or images printed by a machine or printer. Each one is hand pressed on the surface of the block, color by color.
How are prints made?
Prints can be done in a variety of ways- intaglio, relief, lithography, etc. I create Relief Prints where an image is carved into a wood block (aka a matrix) and rolled up with ink. Paper is then placed on top, and pressure is applied by running it through a press or by hand. Pressure transfers the ink to the paper making the final print.
